Electoral rolls are the nearest record Australians have to census listings and hence are extremely important to local, social and family historians. This collection provides information on approximately 783,000 electors in Queensland who were registered to vote on the Commonwealth Roll of 1959. The information recorded includes the person's name, gender, residence, occupation, and polling information (i.e. division, subdivision and roll number).

Compulsory enrolment was introduced for all federal rolls from 1911, so the 1959 roll should reflect the adult population (over 21 years) excluding the foreign and indigenous population. Voting in federal elections was compulsory from 1925.

This index includes all electors recorded in the 1959 rolls [source: National Archives of Australia, Series BP94/2, Commonwealth Electoral Rolls for Queensland].

Queensland Family History Society Inc. aims to promote the study of family, and local history, genealogy, and heraldry, and to encourage the collection and preservation of records relating to the history of Queensland families. This collection was produced by Queensland Family History Society as a project supported by the Queensland government through its Q150 Community Funding Program. www.qfhs.org.au

Leonard Victor WatersResidence: 1959 - Inala, Queensland, Australia
Leonard Victor Waters was the only Aborigine to serve as a fighter pilot in the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II. This also made him the first Aboriginal Australian military aviator. Prior to joining the Air Force, Waters worked as a shearer in Queensland--an occupation he eventually returned to after the War.
